Everglades Area Tours' Fakahatchee Island Heritage and Birding Tour is a wonderful adventure for the whole family and a great introduction to the area. The entire Everglades area, including Everglades National Park, is a wonderful place for birding and has a long history and diverse culture.
Fakahatchee Island is special part of the area rich in local heritage, bird life and native flora species. The trip, in stable, comfortable boat to and from is wonderful, but when combined with the naturalist led walk on this remote island, the experience is truly special.
Fakahatchee Island is an ancient Calusa Indian mitten that was settled by local Everglades' families in the late 1800's. Departing in a very comfortable powerboat from Everglades City/Chokoloskee Island, we travel through Everglades National Park through the "gates" to Fakahatchee Bay. Along the way, we expect to encounter dolphins, manatees, and large numbers of wading birds. Learning about the rich heritage and culture of the area while you stand amongst the the old homesteads and cisterns is quite an experience. The island also hosts numerous native and invasive species of plants including orchids, bromeliads and one of the largest "pencil trees" we have ever seen. This two-hour experience departs from Everglades City/Chokoloskee at 9:00 and is just $85.95 for adults. Reservations are important as we limit this tour to six guests. Don't forget your cameras and binoculars!
